In memoriam of Lucien Simont, a founding partner of our firm, we reflect on the profound impact he had on the legal community, his pioneering spirit, and the indelible mark he left on the practice of law. Mr. Simont, who played a pivotal role in the establishment of Simont Braun and passed away on October 29th 2023, was not only a passionate lawyer, but also a mentor, a visionary, and a man of diverse interests.
The early Years
Descendant from a lineage of lawyers at the Court of Cassation, born in Uccle and raised amidst the hills and forests of the ancient county of Salm (Vielsalm – Belgium). Having graduated in 1955 from the ULB University, he quickly immersed himself in the legal profession, establishing a reputation for rigour, tenacity, and humility.
Academic contributions
Lucien Simont excelled in various legal domains, from civil procedure to commercial law, becoming a prominent figure in the Belgian legal landscape. His commitment to the legal profession extended beyond the courtroom, as he was also known for his academic activities. His encyclopedic knowledge of the law, cultivated through his practice in cassation, reflected in his brilliant career as a professor, covering topics ranging from contract law to commercial law, from civil procedure to company law and other areas of private law.
International vision and professional legacy
Always aware of the need for adaptation and open to embrace change, Lucien Simont played an important role in anticipating and responding to the evolving legal landscape. In 1966, he co-founded the association Simont, Gutt & Simont, which later transformed into Simont & Simont. In the late 1980s, foreseeing the trend of internationalisation, he spearheaded the creation of an integrated international association spanning the Netherlands, Belgium, and France, resulting in the establishment of Stibbe Simont. In 2003, at the age of 70, he and some of his partners left Stibbe, joining forces with Braun Bigwood to found Simont Braun.
Lucien Simont’s leadership extended beyond legal strategy; he had a profound understanding of the market and a clear vision for the future.
