Thomas Derval
Thomas Derval specialises in contract & tort, financial and insurance law. He combines an advisory and litigation practice in these fields.
He has an all-round legal and regulatory expertise covering the full spectrum of the regulated economy (including banking, insurance, financial services, payments, credits, crypto and crowdfunding). He advises a diverse range of Belgian and international clients, both public and private, and has developed significant experience assisting actors of the Fintech and Insurtech industry.
Thomas assists clients both in structuring their operations (e.g. licencing, governance, contracts, and product rollout) and in defending their interests before the courts and supervisory authorities (FSMA, NBB, FPS Economy or Ombudsman).
He is also an expert in contract law and civil liability. He advises on B2B and B2C contractual matters and represents clients in civil and commercial disputes, particularly those involving financial or insurance-related issues.
Alongside his practice, Thomas is an Associate Researcher and Assistant Lecturer at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), where he teaches Contract and Torts seminars. He regularly speaks at conferences and contributes to academic publications in his areas of expertise.
Thomas is the recipient of the Georges Boels pleadings prize awarded by the French-speaking Brussels bar. He is considered a “Next Generation Partner” in Insurance and is recommended in Financial Services (Legal 500) and is also ranked as “Up and Coming” in the Fintech sector (Chambers & Partners).
